The relationship between antihypertensive medications and mood disorders: analysis of linked healthcare data for 1.8 million patients

Richard J. Shaw et al.

Summary: Recent research suggests that certain classes of antihypertensive medications, such as angiotensin antagonists (AAs) and calcium channel blockers, may be associated with reduced risk of new-onset bipolar disorder (BD) and increased risk of new-onset major depressive disorder (MDD) in patients without a history of mood disorders. However, for patients with a past history of mood disorders, all classes of antihypertensives were associated with increased risk of future episodes of MDD.
