Thermo-acoustic Instabilities in the PRECCINSTA Combustor Investigated Using a Compressible LES-pdfApproach

Daniel Fredrich et al.

Summary: This study predicts the evolution of self-excited thermo-acoustic instabilities in a gas turbine model combustor using large eddy simulation. The oscillatory behavior of the flame is successfully captured without external forcing, showing dominance of a thermo-acoustic mode at 300 Hz. The predicted limit-cycle amplitude closely matches experimental measurements, with a phase-resolved study providing a detailed description of the physical mechanisms sustaining the closed feedback loop.

Stabilization mechanisms of CH4 premixed swirled flame enriched with a non-premixed hydrogen injection

D. Laera et al.

Summary: High-fidelity Large Eddy Simulations (LES) were used to study the impact of hydrogen injection on a lean turbulent CH4/Air premixed flame, with an Analytically Reduced Chemistry (ARC) mechanism and different transport modeling strategies. The results showed large variations in mixture properties and flame structure, highlighting the importance of using complex transport properties in LES involving hydrogen combustion.

Grid-point and time-step requirements for direct numerical simulation and large-eddy simulation

Xiang I. A. Yang et al.

Summary: This paper revisits the grid-point and time-step requirements for DNS and LES of turbulent boundary layers and establishes more general requirements. By considering the relationship between local grid spacing and the Kolmogorov length scale, accurate requirements for different simulation methods are proposed. According to the estimated costs, the computational costs of different simulation methods also vary.

Large Eddy Simulation of turbulent reacting flows with conjugate heat transfer and radiative heat transfer

C. Fureby

Summary: Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is a popular model for predicting turbulent combustion, but thermal radiation and conjugate heat transfer are often overlooked. Experimental results show that considering thermal radiation and conjugate heat transfer in LES simulations results in better agreement with experimental data compared to models that do not consider these effects.
