Provenance of sub-aerial surface sediments in the Tarim Basin, Western China

Xiuling Chen et al.

Summary: The surface sediments in the Tarim Basin originate from Central Asia and adjacent arid/semi-arid areas, being completely homogenized by the Westerlies and local wind systems before deposition. The sediments in most parts of the basin contain a higher proportion of dust from Central Asia in the 2-16μm fraction and exhibit a relatively high level of homogeneity. Additionally, materials derived from regional sources dominate the 32-63μm and >63μm fractions, with fluvial systems playing an important role as additional transport mechanisms.

Drivers for Asynchronous Patterns of Dust Accumulation in Central and Eastern Asia and in Greenland During the Last Glacial Maximum

Liangqing Cheng et al.

Summary: This study analyzed 143 loess OSL ages from Central Asia, finding that dust accumulation during the late Last Glacial Maximum was greater than during the early LGM. The temporal variability of dust accumulation in Central Asia is similar to that of the Chinese Loess Plateau, both following precession. However, in Greenland, dust accumulation was stronger during the early LGM, following obliquity.

Quantifying proportions of different material sources to loess based on a grid search and Monte Carlo model: A case study of the Ili Valley, Central Asia

Mengxiu Zeng et al.

Summary: The study analyzed samples from different regions of the Ili Valley to determine the sources of loess deposits. The results showed that proximal materials dominate Ili loess, with alluvial-diluvial sediments significantly influencing the western region. The proportion of modern riverbed sediment decreases from west to east, with differing levels of dust and topsoil found in each region.

Spatio-temporal distribution of Quaternary loess across Central Asia

Yougui Song et al.

Summary: Central Asia is a major loess region in the world, with loess sediments mainly distributed on the windward piedmonts of high mountains and river terraces, closely related to atmospheric circulations, regional climate, and landforms. Studies show that most loess sediments have developed since the last interglacial-glacial period, but may extend into the Pliocene. New dating techniques are needed for high-resolution paleoclimate reconstruction.
