Competitive Desulfonylative Reduction and Oxidation of α-Sulfonylketones Promoted by Photoinduced Electron Transfer with 2-Hydroxyaryl-1,3-dimethylbenzimidazolines under Air

Summary: The study investigates the desulfonylation reactions of alpha-sulfonylketones promoted by photoinduced electron transfer using 2-hydroxyarylbenzimidazolines (BIH-ArOH). The results show that photoexcited 2-hydroxynaphthylbenzimidazoline (BIH-NapOH) promotes both reduction and oxidation of sulfonylketones under aerobic conditions through pathways involving alpha-ketoalkyl radicals.

Enantioselective N-heterocyclic carbene-catalysed intermolecular crossed benzoin condensations: improved catalyst design and the role of in situ racemisation

Summary: The enantioselective intermolecular crossed-benzoin condensation mediated by novel chiral N-heterocyclic carbenes derived from pyroglutamic acid has been investigated. Increasing both the steric requirement and the electron-withdrawing characteristics of the N-aryl ring led to more chemoselective, efficient and enantioselective chemistry. Subsequent protocol optimization involving o-substituted benzaldehyde as one reacting partner allowed a range of crossed-benzoins to be synthesized in moderate-good yields with moderate to excellent enantioselectivity.
