Visible-Light-Driven, Metal-Free Divergent Difunctionalization of Alkenes Using Alkyl Formates

Summary: The visible light-driven metal-free divergent difunctionalization of alkenes triggered by intermolecular addition of alkoxycarbonyl radicals under ambient conditions was introduced in the study. Substituted alkanoates, including beta-alkoxy, beta-hydroxy, beta-dimethoxymethoxy, and beta-formyloxy alkanoates, could be easily accessed with high functional group tolerance and efficiency. The mechanism study revealed that beta-hydroxy alkanoates were generated by a selective decomposition of orthoformates promoted by the N-alkoxyazinium salt.
