CLUES model calibration: residual analysis to investigate potential sources of model error

Annette F. Semadeni-Davies et al.

Summary: This paper presents the latest calibrations of the CLUES model for total nitrogen, total phosphorus and Escherichia coli in New Zealand rivers. The model provides reasonable load estimates at the catchment scale, but there is significant uncertainty in the parameterisation and no systematic bias was found in the calibration.

The role of experiential learning in the adoption of best land management practices

Murat Okumah et al.

Summary: Agriculture is essential for global food security but also contributes significantly to environmental degradation. Policymakers are increasingly focused on influencing farmers' behavior to adopt best management practices, with the provision of advice aimed at raising awareness of environmental pollution and mitigation measures. However, the link between awareness and behavior is indirect and influenced by other factors, highlighting the importance of understanding the role of experiential learning in behavioral changes.

Reflecting on the journey of environmental farm planning in New Zealand

Simon Stokes et al.

Summary: Environmental farm planning in New Zealand has evolved since the 1950s, with increasing demands from public and consumers for high-quality produce with strong environmental values. The implementation of national-scale freshwater farm plans will be mandatory and enforceable within a few years, potentially making New Zealand a world leader in environmental management if plans are farmer-centric and add value to their businesses.

Quantifying contaminant losses to water from pastoral land uses in New Zealand III. What could be achieved by 2035?

Richard W. McDowell et al.

Summary: In order to reduce losses of nitrogen, phosphorus and sediment from dairy and sheep/beef farms, comprehensive mitigation actions should be fully implemented. Research shows that if these actions are fully implemented by 2035, potential decreases in losses could be up to 34%, 39% and 66% respectively.
