Glomalin - Truths, myths, and the future of this elusive soil glycoprotein

Jiri Holatko et al.

Summary: The term "Glomalin" was originally used to describe a hypothetical gene product of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and later redefined as glomalin-related soil proteins (GRSP) without substantial changes in underlying concepts. It has been linked to various soil features and is often correlated with AMF biomass in soil. The chemical structure of GRSP extracted from soil remains unclear due to the unspecific mode of its extraction and various analytical approaches used. Future research is needed to clarify its exact composition, controls over its production and accumulation in soils, and its role in soil ecology and food webs.
