Chaos may enhance expressivity in cerebellar granular layer

Keita Tokuda et al.

Summary: Recent evidence suggests that Golgi cells in the cerebellar granular layer are densely connected to each other with massive gap junctions, contributing to the representational complexity of the granular layer. By constructing a model and evaluating the network's capability, it is found that chaotic dynamics induced by gap junction diffusion result in complex output patterns, and the reservoir's long non-recursive time series can represent the passage of time from external input.

Cerebellar granule cell axons support high-dimensional representations

Frederic Lanore et al.

Summary: Recordings from hundreds of cerebellar granule cell axons using two-photon calcium imaging showed that population activity is high-dimensional, with distinct behavioral states represented along orthogonal dimensions in neuronal activity space. These findings suggest that the cerebellar cortex supports high-dimensional representations and segregates behavioral state-dependent computations into orthogonal subspaces, similar to the neocortex.
