Effective adsorption of dyes on an activated carbon prepared from carboxymethyl cellulose: Experiments, characterization and advanced modelling

Huifeng Wang et al.

Summary: An activated carbon with high surface area and outstanding adsorption properties was prepared for dye removal from water, obtained from the chemical activation and pyrolysis of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. Different characterization techniques and experimental adsorption isotherms at different temperatures were utilized to interpret the dye adsorption mechanism. Overall, the new adsorbent showed competitive performance for dye removal in aqueous solution.

Eco-Structured Adsorptive Removal of Tigecycline from Wastewater: Date Pits' Biochar versus the Magnetic Biochar

Marwa El-Azazy et al.

Summary: Non-magnetic and magnetic low-cost biochar derived from date pits were utilized for tigecycline removal from artificially contaminated water. Magnetic biochar showed higher adsorption efficiency and capacity compared to non-magnetic biochar, making it a promising material for tigecycline removal from water.

Competitive adsorption of pharmaceuticals in lake water and wastewater effluent by pristine and NaOH-activated biochars from spent coffee wastes: Contribution of hydrophobic and π-π interactions

Jaegwan Shin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the competitive adsorption mechanisms of pharmaceuticals on pristine and NaOH-activated biochars from spent coffee wastes in lake water and wastewater effluent. The results showed that the NaOH-activated biochar had a higher adsorption capacity for pharmaceuticals due to its enhanced aromatic structure, facilitating pi-pi interactions. The thermodynamic calculations demonstrated that the competitive adsorption on NaOH-activated biochar occurred more spontaneously over a wide range of pH and ionic strength compared to pristine biochar.

Biochar obtained from spent coffee grounds: Evaluation of adsorption properties and its application in a voltammetric sensor for lead (II) ions

Geovane A. Oliveira et al.

Summary: In this study, biochar samples were prepared from spent coffee grounds at different pyrolysis temperatures and activated using nitric acid treatment to increase surface groups. The chemically treated biochar showed enhanced functional groups, leading to improved response in pre-concentration of lead ions. Under optimized conditions, the biochar-based carbon paste electrode exhibited a linear dynamic range of 0.128 to 2.44 μmol L-1 for lead ions detection.
