Modified Nodal Cuttings and Shoot Tips Protocol for Rapid Regeneration of Cannabis sativa L.

Tomasz Wrobel et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to develop a micropropagation protocol for fibrous, Cannabidiol (CBD) rich hemp variety Epsilon 68. A nodal and tip cutting protocol was developed and compared with other methods using plant growth regulators with cytokine activity in order to obtain an average of 4.2 +/- 1.43 SD explants per tip. Plants from isolated lines were acclimatized to field conditions, and the cannabinoid content in the inflorescences was evaluated. The described micropropagation protocol may be valuable for breeding hemp varieties and conserving germplasm.

Season-long characterization of high-cannabinoid hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) reveals variation in cannabinoid accumulation, flowering time, and disease resistance

George M. Stack et al.

Summary: With the rapid increase in high-cannabinoid hemp production, there is a pressing need to study available germplasm and develop knowledge for breeding uniform and stable cultivars. This study evaluated 30 high-cannabidiol hemp cultivars and found significant variation in growth rate, flowering time, and cannabinoid chemotype. Some cultivars showed genetic resistance to powdery mildew and varied in biomass production and cannabinoid content, indicating the importance of further breeding for improved disease resistance and optimized flowering times.

Summary: The recent legalization of Cannabis has created a need for effective propagation and biotechnologies for the species. However, research in this area is limited due to historical prohibitions and restrictions. Existing literature has limitations, including the use of proxies for drug-type Cannabis and lack of reproducibility. The multiplication phase of micropropagation faces challenges such as culture decline.

Summary: The study utilized GRNN-FOA models for the first time to predict and optimize growth and paclitaxel biosynthesis in Corylus avellana cell culture. The results showed superior prediction performances and great accordance between the predicted and observed values, indicating that GRNN-FOA may serve as a new mathematical tool for forecasting and optimizing secondary metabolite production in plant in vitro culture.
