Gut dysbiosis in severe mental illness and chronic fatigue: a novel trans-diagnostic construct? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Jenelle Marcelle Safadi et al.

Summary: Reduced gut-microbial diversity, or gut dysbiosis, has been linked to an anhedonic/amotivational syndrome, or sickness behavior, in patients with severe mental disorders and chronic fatigue. Elevated levels of proxy biomarkers of gut dysbiosis were found in patients compared to healthy controls, and these markers were positively correlated with the severity of sickness behavior. Further research comparing trans-diagnostic and categorical approaches is necessary for potential advancement in treatment for these conditions.

The gut-microbiome as a target for the treatment of schizophrenia: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials of add-on strategies

Amedeo Minichino et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of add-on strategies targeting the gut-microbiome on the treatment of schizophrenia through systematic review and meta-analysis. While some medications showed potential efficacy on negative symptoms of schizophrenia, antibiotics trials yielded negative findings, highlighting the need for further research in the field of gut-microbiome-host interaction in psychosis.

The role of the gut microbiome in the development of schizophrenia

John R. Kelly et al.

Summary: Schizophrenia is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Precise regulation of neural circuitry development and microbiota-gut-brain axis signaling play crucial roles in cognitive and emotional functions. Understanding these mechanisms may lead to potential translational interventions in managing schizophrenia.
