Tailoring the energy state of a Zr-based metallic glass (MG) through constrained compression reveals a strong dependence of MG strain rate sensitivity on energy state. The hardness of as-cast MG increases with strain rate, while no dependence is observed in highly rejuvenated MG. These observations can be well understood through the free volume model.
Through tailoring the energy state of a Zr-based metallic glass (MG) by constrained compression, we revealed that the strain rate sensitivity of MGs strongly depends on the energy state. For the as-cast MG with low energy state, hardness increases with the increasing strain rate, showing a positive m value of 0.0132. However, the hardness is independent on the strain rate in the highly rejuvenated MG with a high energy state. These observations can be well understood from free volume model. (c) 2021 Elsevier B.V.
