Effect of environmental history on the habitat-forming kelp Macrocystis pyrifera responses to ocean acidification and warming: a physiological and molecular approach

Pamela A. Fernandez et al.

Summary: The study found that there were no significant differences in the responses to ocean acidification and warming between different populations, but intrinsic differences among populations may be related to natural variability in CO2, NO3-, and seawater temperatures driven by coastal upwelling. Further research with additional populations and fluctuating climate change conditions is needed to determine precisely how natural variability in environmental conditions might influence a species' response to climate change.

Reef state and performance as indicators of cumulative impacts on coral reefs

Carolina Castro-Sanguino et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impacts of multiple stressors on coral cover and performance in the Central and Southern Great Barrier Reef, finding that water quality metrics are better predictors of performance than state. Additionally, the response of different coral groups to stressors varies, highlighting the need to evaluate performance metrics to prioritize local management interventions.
