Onsager principle in polymer dynamics

Masao Doi

Summary: The Onsager principle, proposed by Lars Onsager in 1931, is a variational principle important in describing the dynamics of polymer and soft matter systems. Derived kinetic equations from this principle are commonly used, and it can also provide approximate solutions due to its minimization nature. Examples from capillary hydrodynamics, gel dynamics, and flow of viscoelastic fluids are often used to illustrate its applications.

Deposition pattern of drying droplets

Xiuyuan Yang et al.

Summary: The drying of liquid droplets with nonvolatile solutes induces rich deposition patterns on the substrate, which has important ramifications for technical applications. This review focuses on the development of physical understanding of tailoring specific ring-like deposition patterns of drying droplets, with particular attention to the application of Onsager variational principle (OVP) theory. Recent progress in OVP theory has made it a promising tool for predicting deposition patterns of drying droplets.
