Patella alta is reduced following MPFL reconstruction but has no effect on quality-of-life outcomes in patients with patellofemoral instability

Laurie Anne Hiemstra et al.

Summary: This study found that isolated medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction for lateral patellofemoral instability significantly decreased the patellar height ratio, with the greatest effect in patients with higher pre-operative Caton-Deschamps indices. Among patients with pre-operative patella alta, 59.6% showed normalization of the patellar height ratio. Further research should focus on the utility and results of tibial tubercle distalization in patients with patella alta.

Clinical outcomes after medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction: an analysis of changes in the patellofemoral joint alignment

Yuta Fujii et al.

Summary: The post-operative outcomes of MPFL reconstruction for recurrent patellar dislocation are favorable, but it is important to note the potential insufficient union between the bone tunnel and tendon graft, as well as elongation of the necrotic tendon graft, which may alter the alignment of the patellofemoral joint within three months after the operation.

A proposed safety angle for dual bundle MPFL reconstruction: an observational magnetic resonance imaging study

Zhi-Hong Chew et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to demarcate a safe working zone in the axial plane for the patella tunnels, based on MRI knee images of 201 male patients. By measuring the bone thickness anterior to each tunnel and safety angle, a potentially useful intra-operative guide for the surgeon was provided, potentially reducing the risks of fracture and articular cartilage injury in patellae with Wiberg 1 and 2 morphologies.

Single-tunnel and double-tunnel medial patellofemoral ligament reconstructions have similar clinical, radiological and functional results

Niyazi Ercan et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the clinical, radiological, and functional results of patients undergoing single-tunnel and double-tunnel medial patellofemoral ligament reconstructions. Results showed similar outcomes in both techniques, regardless of the number of tunnels used.
