Revisiting travellers' diarrhoea justifying antibiotic treatment: prospective study

K. A. Turunen et al.

Summary: The study identified risk factors for TDjuAB(+) including long travel duration and young age, and increased risk for Campylobacter coli/jejuni and ETEC STh toxin among subjects not taking antibiotics. Less than half of TDjuAB(+) cases used antibiotics, indicating that most cases meeting current criteria recover without antimicrobial treatment.

Dynamics of intestinal multidrug-resistant bacteria colonisation contracted by visitors to a high-endemic setting: a prospective, daily, real-time sampling study

Anu Kantele et al.

Summary: This study characterized the dynamics of acquiring multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial colonization during travel in low-income and middle-income countries. The results showed that most participants acquired ESBL-producing Gram-negative bacteria at some point during the study, with colonization status varying day by day. The findings highlight the need for preventing travelers' diarrhea and limiting antibiotic use to address the increased burden of multidrug-resistant bacteria exposure during travel.
