Micromechanics of machining and wear in hard and brittle materials

Brian R. Lawn et al.

Summary: Hard and brittle solids with covalent/ionic bonding are widely used in modern manufacturing technologies, and optimizing shaping processes can reduce manufacturing time and cost while extending component longevity. However, the same processes can also contribute to wear and fatigue degradation in service. Education development of advanced finishing protocols for this class of solids requires a comprehensive understanding of damage mechanisms at small-scale contacts from a materials perspective. The role of microstructure in material removal modes is highlighted, and pathways to future research—experimental, analytical, and computational—are indicated.

Dislocation-based crack initiation and propagation in single-crystal SrTiO3

Xufei Fang et al.

Summary: Understanding the irreversible deformation processes, particularly dislocation activation and crack formation, in functional oxides such as cubic SrTiO3 is crucial for optimal structural design and mechanical reliability in advanced electronic devices. This study demonstrates the sequence of irreversible deformation events in single-crystal SrTiO3, highlighting the importance of elastic deformation, dislocation activation, and crack initiation and propagation. The findings suggest that similar behaviors may be observed in other ceramic materials with a cubic structure.

Photoindentation: A New Route to Understanding Dislocation Behavior in Light

Atsutomo Nakamura et al.

Summary: Recent studies have discovered significant plasticity in bulk compression of single-crystal ZnS under complete darkness. The introduction of the photoindentation technique provides a new approach to understand the effects of light on dislocation nucleation and mobility. Research shows that light irradiation significantly increases the pop-in stress of dislocation nucleation near the surface of ZnS, leading to a drastic reduction in dislocation mobility.

Dislocation-mediated shear amorphization in boron carbide

Kolan Madhav Reddy et al.

Summary: The onset of shear amorphization in single-crystal boron carbide was experimentally measured through nanoindentation and transmission electron microscopy. It was found that rate-dependent loading discontinuity in nanoindentation load-displacement curves results from the formation of nanosized amorphous bands via shear amorphization. Stochastic analysis of the pop-in events revealed characteristics such as exceptionally small activation volume, slow nucleation rate, and lower activation energy, indicating that the high-pressure structural transition is activated and initiated by dislocation nucleation.
