How to Grow a Tree: Plant Voltage-Dependent Cation Channels in the Spotlight of Evolution

Ingo Dreyer et al.

Summary: Phylogenetic analysis is a powerful tool for studying the evolution of physiological processes in plants. Research on two families of ion channels in plant electrical signaling revealed their conservative evolution on land, highlighting the importance of electrical signaling for survival. To prevent erroneous conclusions, guidelines for analyzing ion channel evolution in plants have been suggested.

How potassium came to be the dominant biological cation: of metabolism, chemiosmosis, and cation selectivity since the beginnings of life

Nikolay Korolev

Summary: Potassium is the major cation in the cytoplasm of almost all living cells, while sodium dominates in the extracellular fluids. Both prokaryotes and eukaryotes require elaborate mechanisms and significant energy to maintain the asymmetric distribution of K+ and Na+. This essay presents original evidence explaining how bacteria chose potassium at the beginning of evolution and why it remains essential for eukaryotes.

Adaptable and Multifunctional Ion-Conducting Aquaporins

Stephen D. Tyerman et al.

Summary: Aquaporins have various functions in plants, including as water and neutral solute channels, signaling hubs, and disease virulence factors. They show differences compared to animal aquaporins in terms of ion transportation, potentially playing important roles in different membranes. The permeability of aquaporins can span a wide range, requiring tight regulation through protein interactions and posttranslational modifications.

Potassium Control of Plant Functions: Ecological and Agricultural Implications

Jordi Sardans et al.

Summary: Potassium (K+) and calcium (Ca2+) are the most abundant inorganic chemicals in plant cellular media, and they play crucial roles in various physiological functions such as plant growth, nutrient and metabolite transport, and stress responses. Studies have shown the importance of potassium in controlling cellular processes and maintaining plant health, highlighting its significance in ecological and agricultural studies for crop production and global food security.

Potassium content diminishes in infected cells of Medicago truncatula nodules due to the mislocation of channels MtAKT1 and MtSKOR/GORK

Elena E. Fedorova et al.

Summary: Rhizobia form a symbiotic relationship with legumes, converting nitrogen into ammonia in root nodules. Studies suggest that infected cells in the nodules may have potassium imbalance due to mislocalization of plant ion channels, affecting ion transport and balance.
