In vitro study on α-amylase inhibitory and α-glucosidase of a new stigmastane-type steroid saponin from the leaves of Vernonia amygdalina

Hoang Le Tuan Anh et al.

Summary: Four compounds, including a new steroid saponin, were isolated from the leaves of Vernonia amygdalina using chromatographic separations. The structures were determined using spectroscopic methods, and the inhibitory activities of these compounds against two enzymes were reported for the first time. Compound 1 showed significant inhibitory activity against both enzymes.

Bioguided fractionation of hypoglycaemic component in methanol extract of Vernonia amygdalina: an in vivo study

Stanley I. R. Okoduwa et al.

Summary: Nine components were isolated from Vernonia amygdalina leaves, with Component C5 identified as the most potent in reducing blood glucose levels by 12.55%. Spectroscopic analysis revealed C5 to have a structure consistent with 11 beta,13-dihydrovernolide. Further research is needed for pharmaceutical development of this compound.
