Auditory Corticothalamic Neurons Are Recruited by Motor Preparatory Inputs

Kameron K. Clayton et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that in mice engaged in an active listening task, L6 CT neurons in the primary auditory cortex become active prior to anticipated sounds, potentially being activated by extra-sensory inputs. Additionally, rabies tracing of monosynaptic inputs revealed a potential source of motor-related input to A1 L6 CT neurons.

A Disynaptic Circuit in the Globus Pallidus Controls Locomotion Inhibition

Asier Aristieta et al.

Summary: The basal ganglia inhibit movements through two independent pathways, and affect external globus pallidus neurons differently. Recent research suggests that arkypallidal neurons play a role in a novel disynaptic feedback loop, inhibiting locomotion only when their activity increases.

A spiking model of basal ganglia dynamics in stopping behavior supported by arkypallidal neurons

Lorenz Goenner et al.

Summary: Recent findings challenge the common view that stopping action plans by the basal ganglia is achieved mainly by the subthalamic nucleus alone. The proposed pause-then-cancel model suggests that the subthalamic nucleus provides a rapid stimulus-unspecific pause signal, followed by a stop-cue-specific cancel signal from striatum-projecting arkypallidal neurons.

Distinct populations of cortical pyramidal neurons mediate drug reward and aversion

A. F. Garcia et al.

Summary: Processing within the anterior cingulate cortex is crucial for appropriate behavior, and dysfunction following chronic drug use is thought to play a major role in drug addiction. Two types of cortical pyramidal projection neurons regulate distinct features of a drug experience, its positive and negative aspects, respectively, supporting a revised theory of cortical function in addiction.

Differential Synaptic Input to External Globus Pallidus Neuronal Subpopulations In Vivo

Maya Ketzef et al.

Summary: The rodent external globus pallidus (GPe) contains two main neuronal subpopulations, prototypic and arkypallidal cells, with distinct functional synaptic connectivity patterns. Both subpopulations receive excitatory and inhibitory inputs during slow wave activity and respond to sensory stimulation with multiphasic patterns. The connectivity patterns of GPe subtypes underlie their respective functional roles.

Striatal Direct Pathway Targets Npas1+ Pallidal Neurons

Qiaoling Cui et al.

Summary: The study reveals that direct-pathway striatal projection neurons not only innervate the external globus pallidus (GPe), but also selectively target Npas1(+) neurons within it. In a Parkinson's disease model, this projection is significantly strengthened, leading to movement suppression. This highlights the critical role of the direct-pathway striatal input to GPe as a circuit mechanism for regulating movement in both healthy and parkinsonian states.
