Doughnut vertebroplasty for circumferential aggressive vertebral hemangiomas

Cecile Roscop et al.

Summary: Doughnut vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive, safe, and effective treatment for patients with aggressive circumferential vertebral hemangiomas. It improves pain in over 90% of patients and reduces radicular and neurological symptoms associated with these lesions.

Onyx injection by direct puncture for presurgical embolization of a C2 hypervascular metastasis from a thyroid cancer

Frederic Clarencon et al.

Summary: Surgery for spinal hypervascular lesions, such as hemangioma or metastases from thyroid or renal cancer, can be challenging due to the risk of massive blood loss. Presurgical embolization is a common method to reduce this risk, but some configurations may limit its possibility, making direct percutaneous puncture and embolization with liquid embolic agent a valuable option in such cases. The technical video highlights the importance of direct puncture technique and safety rules to prevent neurological complications.

Traumatic compression fractures in thoracic-lumbar junction: vertebroplasty vs conservative management in a prospective controlled trial

Salvatore D'Oria et al.

Summary: Vertebroplasty is a safe and effective treatment for post-traumatic thoracic-lumbar fractures compared to conservative management. A study involving 102 patients showed that patients who underwent vertebroplasty had faster improvement in pain intensity, functional ability, and return to work, with less progression in Cobb's angle compared to those who received conservative treatment. Additionally, morbidity, mortality, and complication rates were similar between the two groups.

Transforaminal intrathecal delivery of nusinersen for older children and adults with spinal muscular atrophy and complex spinal anatomy: an analysis of 200 consecutive injections

John J. Weaver et al.

Summary: Transforaminal intrathecal delivery of nusinersen is feasible and safe for patients with distorted spinal anatomy. The use of CBCT optimizes needle trajectory and reduces risks, and may be selectively used for subsequent procedures.

The 'armed concrete' approach: stent-screw-assisted internal fixation (SAIF) reconstructs and internally fixates the most severe osteoporotic vertebral fractures

Daniela Distefano et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed 80 treated vertebrae and found that the SAIF technique is a minimally invasive, safe, and effective treatment for patients with severe osteoporotic VCFs with middle-column involvement. The reconstruction of the damaged vertebral body and clinical outcomes were satisfactory with significant improvement in patient-reported pain scores.

Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty in the USA from 2004 to 2017: national inpatient trends, regional variations, associated diagnoses, and outcomes

Nima Hafezi-Nejad et al.

Summary: National inpatient trends of vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty utilization remained stable after a period of decline from 2008 to 2012, while the financial burden of hospitalizations increased. Significant regional variations persisted across the USA despite recent improvements in outcomes.

Treating traumatic thoracolumbar spine fractures using minimally invasive percutaneous stabilization plus balloon kyphoplasty: a 102-patient series

Henri Salle et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed 102 patients who underwent PPSF+BK for single traumatic thoracolumbar fractures from 2007 to 2019. The results showed that this surgical treatment was safe and effective, leading to improved kyphosis and restoration of VBH, particularly effective for fractures classified as Magerl A3 and B2.
