Vitamin D insufficiency as a potential culprit in critical COVID-19 patients

Ruhul Munshi et al.

Summary: The study suggests that serum vitamin D levels may be associated with the prognosis of COVID-19. Diagnosis of vitamin D deficiency could assist in assessing patients' potential for developing severe COVID-19, and appropriate preventative and/or therapeutic interventions may improve COVID-19 outcomes.

Aging, Immunity, and COVID-19: How Age Influences the Host Immune Response to Coronavirus Infections?

Varnica Bajaj et al.

Summary: The novel coronavirus has greatly impacted the world with over 72 million cases and 1.6 million deaths, mostly affecting the elderly population. Aging leads to changes in the immune system, making elderly individuals more susceptible to infections and less responsive to vaccines. Understanding age-related immune system changes is crucial for managing infectious diseases like COVID-19.

The role of extracellular DNA in COVID-19: Clues from inflamm-aging

Gianluca Storci et al.

Summary: Elderly men with age-related diseases have a severe prognosis and high mortality rate from COVID-19, associated with hyper-inflammation. Extracellular DNA, particularly mitochondrial DNA, is seen as a trigger of the inflammatory response, while telomeric DNA may inhibit inflammatory pathways. The depletion of telDNA reservoir and the increase in extracellular mtDNA in elderly men affected by COVID-19 may explain hyper-inflammation, reminiscent of inflamm-aging.

Biomolecular endotype factors involved in COVID-19 airway infectivity: A systematic review

Neil Jain et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the biomolecular factors surrounding otorhinolaryngeal illnesses and their implications on COVID-19 virulence. Different cytokines and Vitamin D were found to play roles in susceptibility to diseases and potential protective mechanisms against COVID-19. Further research is needed to understand the effects of these factors on COVID-19 pathogenesis and potentially guide future therapeutic strategies.

Does the High Prevalence of Vitamin D Deficiency in African Americans Contribute to Health Disparities?

Bruce N. Ames et al.

Summary: African Americans have higher incidence and mortality rates for many health problems compared to European Americans, with a 15 to 20-fold higher prevalence of severe vitamin D deficiency. Dark skin blocks UVB radiation needed for vitamin D synthesis, exacerbating deficiency at high latitudes. Supplementation may improve health outcomes for individuals with dark skin.

Role of Genetic Variants and Gene Expression in the Susceptibility and Severity of COVID-19

Sarita Choudhary et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, understanding genetic risk factors for susceptibility to the disease is essential. Genes like ACE2, TMPRSS2, and DPP4 play key roles in determining disease severity. Research on genetic variants influencing respiratory infections can help identify potential drug targets for COVID-19 patients.
