Axion Emission Can Explain a New Hard X-Ray Excess from Nearby Isolated Neutron Stars

Malte Buschmann et al.

Summary: Axions may be produced thermally inside neutron stars and converted into X rays in magnetic fields, explaining the hard X-ray excess in some isolated neutron stars. These stars were previously expected to only emit flux in UV and soft X-ray bands, with no conventional astrophysical explanation for the observed hard X-ray excess at present.

Cosmic Birefringence Triggered by Dark Matter Domination

Shota Nakagawa et al.

Summary: The study presents a new model predicting cosmic birefringence phenomenon for an axionlike particle coupled to dark matter density after recombination. A simple model is proposed to achieve this prediction, and the implications for QCD axion are also investigated, showing that the domain wall problem can be solved by effective mass.

More axions from strings

Marco Gorghetto et al.

Summary: Clear evidence of scaling violations in the contribution to QCD axion dark matter abundance from string defects is found, suggesting a large number of axions from strings. Nonlinearities around the QCD scale are shown to play a crucial role in determining the final abundance, resulting in a substantially stronger lower bound on the QCD axion mass in the post-inflationary scenario compared to the naive estimate from misalignment.

Kilobyte Cosmic Birefringence from ALP domain walls

Fuminobu Takahashi et al.

Summary: The formation of ALP domain walls without strings in the early Universe can lead to isotropic and anisotropic birefringence of cosmic microwave background polarization. This birefringence can provide information about the number and structure of domain walls at the time of recombination.

Observing invisible axions with gravitational waves

Marco Gorghetto et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the restored Peccei-Quinn symmetry after inflation results in significantly enhanced gravitational wave spectrum at low frequencies produced by axion strings, which provides observational constraints on dark matter overproduction, isocurvature, and dark radiation scenarios. As a result, detectable gravitational wave signals could be generated by ultralight axion-like particles with suitable decay constants.

Approach to scaling in axion string networks

Mark Hindmarsh et al.

Summary: The study reveals that scaling in axion string networks in the radiation era can be well described by a two-parameter velocity-one-scale (VOS) model, with the parameters being insensitive to the initial state of the network. The simulations, even starting far from the fixed point, are accounted for by the VOS model with certain values for the parameters.

QCD axion and gravitational waves in light of NANOGrav results

Nicklas Ramberg et al.

Summary: Research indicates that the NANOGrav team has found a stochastic gravitational wave background signal originating from a network of axionic strings in the early universe, related to a non-standard cosmological model with the dark matter particle QCD axion. The results suggest that under certain conditions, the gravitational wave spectrum from axionic strings is larger, the QCD axion mass is smaller, and the detection results of NANOGrav-12.5 years can be explained by the evolution of QCD axion field in a scenario similar to dust.

Detection of isotropic cosmic birefringence and its implications for axionlike particles including dark energy

Tomohiro Fujita et al.

Summary: By analyzing observational data, the study investigated the possibility of ALPs being responsible for isotropic birefringence and explored their role in dark energy and early dark energy scenarios to alleviate the Hubble tension problem. By limiting parameters, the study narrowed down the range of ALP-photon coupling.
