Can constructed wetlands be more land efficient than centralized wastewater treatment systems? A case study based on direct and indirect land use

Ying Fan et al.

Summary: A comparative study has shown that constructed wetlands are more land use efficient than centralized wastewater treatment systems, with the land use induced by a typical constructed wetland in China revealed to be less than half of that by a centralized wastewater treatment plant. The scenario analysis for China in 2017 estimates that over two billion square meters of land use could be reduced if all centralized wastewater treatment systems are replaced by constructed wetlands, providing a new benchmark for wastewater treatment system management.

Sub-chronic exposure to ammonia inhibits the growth of juvenile Wuchang bream (Megalobrama amblycephala) mainly by downregulation of growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor axis

Honghui Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, exposure of Wuchang bream juveniles to increasing concentrations of total ammonia nitrogen resulted in decreased weight gain and specific growth rate, as well as increased food conversion ratio and mortality. The study also showed that ammonia exposure disrupted the GH/IGF-axis and HPT-axis functions, and down-regulated key genes in the MAPK/ERK pathway and PI3K/AKT pathway in the dorsal muscle, leading to growth inhibition. Additionally, the results indicated that the GH/IGF axis played a more crucial role in regulating growth under persistent ammonia stress in Wuchang bream.
