Biomimetic hybrid scaffold of electrospun silk fibroin and pancreatic decellularized extracellular matrix for islet survival

Yi Zhu et al.

Summary: Islet transplantation is a promising treatment for diabetes, but the destruction of ECM during the isolation process can lead to decreased islet activity. In this study, a nanofiber scaffold made of silk fibroin and pig pancreatic decellularized ECM was designed to mimic the islet ECM and improve islet survival and function. The scaffold showed good hydrophilicity, non-toxicity, and retention of key ECM components, making it a potential candidate for pancreatic tissue engineering and islet transplantation.

Toward improvements for carrying capacity of the cyclodextrin-based nanosponges: recent progress from a material and drug delivery

Jing Deng et al.

Summary: Cyclodextrins are natural materials with multifunctional properties that can encapsulate both hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs, making them effective carriers for drug delivery. The synthesis of nanosponges can enhance drug encapsulation in cyclodextrin cavities to control the rate of drug release. Cyclodextrin-based NPs maintain a high loading capacity of various small molecules for drug delivery.

Structurally optimized suture resistant polylactic acid (PLA)/poly (-caprolactone) (PCL) blend based engineered nanofibrous mats

Deepika Sharma et al.

Summary: The structural fabrication and optimization of PLA/PCL blend-based ENMs were conducted using RSM and Taguchi DoE, which resulted in consistent optimal parametric combinations across both methods. Experimental validation showed excellent accuracy in minimizing bead defects and average fiber diameter. The optimal ENM structures exhibited high suture resistance due to the fine fibers, contrasting with coarse fiber-based ENMs which experienced failures due to network collapse.

An enzyme-mediated controlled release system for curcumin based on cyclodextrin/cyclodextrin degrading enzyme

Sahar Roozbehi et al.

Summary: An enzyme-triggered system based on beta-cyclodextrin has been developed for controlled release of hydrophobic drugs in the presence of maltogenic amylase. The system demonstrated higher cellular uptake, lower IC50 values, and greater anti-proliferative, cytotoxic, and apoptotic effects in cancer cells compared to other formulations. This controlled release system has potential applications for poorly water-soluble drugs or hydrophobic compounds.
