Tracking the history of grapevine cultivation in Georgia by combining geometric morphometrics and ancient DNA

Laurent Bouby et al.

Summary: The Near East and the Caucasus are considered the original domestication centres of Vitis vinifera with Georgia being home to a high diversity of wild and cultivated grapevines. Early evidence of wine making in Georgia dates back to the Neolithic period, around 6000-5800 BC. Through geometric morphometric and palaeogenomic investigations of grape pip samples, it was found that domesticated grapevines appeared around 1000 BC with a great diversity of cultivated shapes. DNA analysis of historic pips revealed close parental relationships to modern Georgian cultivars, suggesting a deep root for modern local vine diversity in early viticulture.

Summary: The study found that the earliest grapevines in the Aegean area were originally in their wild form, with the domestication process occurring during the Middle Bronze Age. Grape pips from the Late Bronze Age and Archaic period showed a high morphological diversity, with most of them classified as modern varieties from the Balkans, Caucasus, and South-West Asia.

Summary: The Italian grape germplasm is characterized by a high level of richness in terms of varieties number, originating largely from a few central varieties distributed into several areas of genetic influence. The pedigree reconstruction highlighted the key role of some cultivars, suggesting a hypothetical migration of certain varieties within the Italian Peninsula.
