Bone substitutes have long been used to treat osseous defects. In order to prevent implant-related infection and enhance bone healing, functionalized biomaterials, antibiotics, and osteoinductive substances have been introduced. This study provides an overview of current surface-coated bone substitutes and offers insights into future perspectives.

This study gives an overview of the current available surface-coated bone substitutes and provides an outlook for future perspectives.
