A systematic review on bio-sequestration of carbon dioxide in bio-concrete systems: a future direction

Abdullah Faisal Alshalif et al.

Summary: The paper reviewed the current perspectives on the development of carbon dioxide sequestration through its conversion into calcite. Geological sequestration is expensive and slow, while bio-sequestration is faster and more cost-effective. Algae have been investigated for atmospheric CO2 bio-sequestration but cannot be used in bio-concrete. Bacteria, on the other hand, show potential in bio-aerated concrete bricks (B-ACB) for effectively capturing and storing CO2, making them a future strategy to reduce CO2 pollution.

An experimental study of mitigating coastal sand dune erosion by microbial- and enzymatic-induced carbonate precipitation

Kai-Wei Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated novel bio-mediated methods (MICP and EICP) for mitigating sand dune erosion under wave attack. Both methods were effective at mild-to-moderate conditions but less effective under adverse conditions due to different spatial distribution patterns of calcite precipitation.

The application of bio-cementation for improvement in collapsibility of loess

X. Sun et al.

Summary: Bio-cementation is effective in solidifying sandy soils and loess soil particles, with the addition of loess soils affecting the pH of the supernatant, bacterial growth, and urease activity to a lesser extent. Samples treated with calcium chloride and calcium acetate showed higher productive rates for calcium carbonate compared to those treated with calcium nitrate. Bio-cementation reduced collapsibility coefficients of samples with varying initial densities, with larger density samples exhibiting higher productive rates for calcium carbonate. Additionally, the treatment cycles had an impact on the decreasing collapsibility coefficients, with larger increasing ranges of productive rates for precipitation observed between 4 to 6 cycles. Adding bacterial suspension and cementation solution together proved more effective for samples with smaller densities, while separate additions were more suitable for samples with larger densities.

Bioprecipitation of calcium carbonate mediated by ureolysis: A review

Armstrong I. Omoregie et al.

Summary: Ureolysis-driven microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a sustainable ground improvement method that has drawn great interest due to its practicality in stabilizing soils, repairing concrete cracks, and remediating heavy metals. Understanding favorable conditions and utilizing bio-engineering testing methods are crucial for successful MICP application. Challenges such as ammonium production, scale-up bioprocess, and treatment cost need to be addressed for further advancement of MICP technology.
