Inhibition of xanthine oxidase in the acute phase of myocardial infarction prevents skeletal muscle abnormalities and exercise intolerance

Hideo Nambu et al.

Summary: Exercise intolerance in patients with heart failure is partly attributed to skeletal muscle abnormalities caused by XO-derived ROS, which can be prevented by inhibition of their production.

Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Improves Impaired Fatty Acid Oxidation Via the Activation of Adenosine Monophosphate-Activated Protein Kinase-alpha - Proliferator-Activated Receptor-r Coactivator-1alpha Signaling in Skeletal Muscle of Mice With Heart Failure

Junichi Matsumoto et al.

Summary: The study showed that treatment with rhBDNF improved exercise capacity in mice with heart failure through enhancing fatty acid oxidation via the activation of the AMPK alpha-PGC1 alpha axis in skeletal muscle. This suggests that BDNF may be a potential therapeutic option to improve exercise capacity in heart failure.

Cardiac-specific loss of mitoNEET expression is linked with age-related heart failure

Takaaki Furihata et al.

Summary: The study revealed the downregulation of a cardiac-specific mitochondrial component in aged mice, leading to heart failure. Mice with cardiac-specific deletion of CISD1 showed cardiac dysfunction after 12 months and developed HF after 16 months. These findings suggest that loss of mitoNEET expression may contribute to age-associated heart failure in older adults.
