Rhodamine-based amide derivatives were synthesized for detecting radical intermediates in organic reactions and used as fluorescent probes in various solvents. Mechanistic studies verified the reversible opening and closing of the spirolactam ring. Compound 21 can be employed to support the radical mechanism or for real-time monitoring of radical intermediates.
