Lipid accumulation and profiling in microalgae Chlorolobion sp. (BIOTECH 4031) and Chlorella sp. (BIOTECH 4026) during nitrogen starvation for biodiesel production

Eldrin Dlr Arguelles et al.

Summary: Lipid-accumulating microalgae, such as Chlorolobion sp. and Chlorella sp., showed increased lipid yield and decreased biomass production under nitrogen-starved culture conditions. The obtained algal biodiesel exhibited high concentrations of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acid methyl esters, making them suitable for biodiesel production. Additionally, the biodiesel properties of the two microalgae met the set specifications of biodiesel standards EN 14214 (European) and ASTM D6751 (American), indicating their potential as raw materials for biodiesel production with superior fuel quality.

A New Species of Freshwater Algae Nephrochlamys yushanlensis sp. nov. (Selenastraceae, Sphaeropleales) and Its Lipid Accumulation during Nitrogen and Phosphorus Starvation

Yevhen Maltsev et al.

Summary: A new species of freshwater plankton, Nephrochlamys yushanlensis sp. nov., was described and found to belong to a new lineage within the genus Nephrochlamys based on morphology, gene sequences, and fatty acid profiles. Experiments demonstrated significant increases in biomass and lipid content under phosphate and nitrate deprivation conditions, suggesting potential for biodiesel production.

Cellular responses and phenol bioremoval by green alga Scenedesmus abundans: Equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic studies

Mustafa A. Fawzy et al.

Summary: The study showed high phenol concentrations reduced chlorophyll and dry weight of Scenedesmus abundans, but increased lipid, protein, and amino acid content. Phenol also enhanced antioxidant activity and catalase enzyme. Biosorption of phenol by dried S. abundans biomass was optimized at pH 6, 0.5 g/100 ml algal dose, 90 min contact time, and 100 mg/L phenol concentration. The biosorption models provided a good fit, with a maximum capacity of 57.8 mg/g. The biosorption mechanism was controlled by pseudo-first order kinetics and was determined to be feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic. Characterization of the biosorbent showed potential for using S. abundans for phenol and organic contaminant removal.
