100% Renewable Energy Scenarios for North America-Spatial Distribution and Network Constraints

Elmar Zozmann et al.

Summary: This study explores three scenarios for renewable energy supply in North America, finding that the continent has sufficient renewable potential to satisfy its energy demand independent of grid assumptions. Solar generation dominates the mix as the least-cost option, and planning generation and transmission capacity expansion simultaneously does not result in high grid investments, with existing grid and storage providing necessary flexibility for intermittent renewable integration.
