Meta-analysis of drought and heat stress combination impact on crop yield and yield components

Itay Cohen et al.

Summary: The combination of drought and heat waves can have a devastating impact on agricultural production and crop yield, affecting harvest index, crop life cycle, and seed characteristics. These impacts are more severe when the stress is applied during the reproductive stage of plants. Future studies and breeding efforts should focus on how different crop species respond to drought and heat combination at the reproductive stage.

Canopy temperature and heat stress are increased by compound high air temperature and water stress and reduced by irrigation - a modeling analysis

Xiangyu Luan et al.

Summary: This study highlights the compound effects of air temperature and water availability on crop heat stress, which are not well quantified. Developing a fully mechanistic model to understand the feedbacks of plant traits and responses to heat and water stress on canopy temperature is essential. Irrigation as a solution to adapt to warmer and drier climates is only partially effective as the benefits decrease with higher average air temperatures.
