Multi-phase field modeling for various fracture mechanisms in composites

Avtar Singh et al.

Summary: Composite materials exhibit a wide range of mechanical responses and unique fracture strength and toughness. The understanding of different failure mechanisms' contributions to overall behavior is essential for manufacturing composites with desired fracture properties. A multi-phase field fracture model is proposed in this study to reveal the micro-mechanical events and fracture behavior of composite materials.

An explicit phase field model for progressive tensile failure of composites

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: This work focuses on systematically investigating progressive failure in composite laminate using a novel phase field model. An alternative approach with explicit solvers is presented to address the issues of solving efficiency and convergence in existing implicit solvers for the PFMs. The proposed model effectively captures various failure modes in composites and demonstrates improved computational efficiency with parallel computing.

Phase field predictions of microscopic fracture and R-curve behaviour of fibre-reinforced composites

Wei Tan et al.

Summary: The computational framework accurately captures the crack path, interface debonding, and load versus displacement response of fiber-reinforced polymer composites. Sensitivity analysis on the crack growth resistance curve to matrix fracture toughness and fiber-matrix interface properties, as well as the influence of porosity on the R-curve, provide insights into microscopic fracture mechanisms and pave the way for efficient design of high fracture toughness composites.

Phase field modelling of microscopic failure in composite laminates

Xiaofei Hu et al.

Summary: This study further extends the authors' previous research on a phase field method for modeling progressive failure in multi-phase materials to capture microscopic failure processes in composite laminates. The auxiliary phase field model for material interface regularization is reformulated. The computational model incorporates both microscopic and macroscopic length scales, using cohesive elements to link different mesh parts and capture intralaminar failure.

Summary: A new phase-field damage formulation was proposed to consider anisotropic damage evolution in solids by introducing a direction-dependent fracture energy function. The fracture energy function values obtained from atomistic calculations were used to predict crack paths and compare reaction forces between finite element and atomistic calculations.

Computational homogenisation of phase-field fracture

Ritukesh Bharali et al.

Summary: In this study, a computational homogenisation method for phase-field fractures is developed, leading to a two-scale phase-field fracture framework. The concept of selective homogenisation is introduced, showing local macro-scale material behavior in numerical experiments. Non-selective homogenisation yields a non-local macro-scale material behavior.
