MXenes: Are they emerging materials for analytical chemistry applications? - A review

Summary: MXenes are a new class of 2D materials with high conductivity and hydrophilicity, making them versatile for various analytical chemistry applications such as electrochemical and optical sensing. Their exceptional surface chemistry, high surface area, and ease of functionalization contribute to their potential as excellent materials for analytical extractions. Limitations, challenges, and future opportunities for MXenes are briefly discussed.

Synthesis and characterization of layered Nb2C MXene/ZnS nanocomposites for highly selective electrochemical sensing of dopamine

Ultrasensitive determination of nitrite based on electrochemical platform of AuNPs deposited on PDDA-modified MXene nanosheets

Summary: A highly sensitive and high-performance electrochemical nitrite sensing platform was constructed based on gold nanoparticles deposited on poly (dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride)-decorated MXene (Ti3C2Tx) (AuNPs/Ti3C2Tx-PDDA). The platform displayed outstanding linear relationship, selectivity, stability, and reproducibility in detecting nitrite, with a detection limit of 0.059 μM and high sensitivity of 250 A mM(-1) cm(-2). Additionally, the platform showed satisfactory feasibility for nitrite sensing in running water and ham sausage samples, demonstrating a facile approach using two-dimensional materials and nanocomposites.

Selective and efficacious photoelectrochemical detection of ciprofloxacin based on the self-assembly of 2D/2D g-C3N4/Ti3C2 composites

Summary: In this study, a g-C3N4/Ti3C2 composite material was designed as a photoelectrochemical sensing material for the detection of ciprofloxacin. The introduction of Ti3C2 and visible light improved optoelectronic performance, with a detection limit of 0.13 nM and good reproducibility, selectivity, and long-term stability demonstrated. The real commercial sample detection confirmed the practical application potential of the g-C3N4/Ti3C2 photo-electrocatalyst for high selectivity and sensitivity in CFX detection.

Summary: In this study, a sensitive and rapid electrochemical aptasensor (MEA) based on MoS2@Ti3C2Tx MXene hybrid was developed for quantification of Thyroxine (T4) within 10 minutes over a dynamic range. The MEA successfully detected T4 in human serum samples and showed good agreement with the ELISA standard method in comparative analysis.

A highly integrated sensing paper for wearable electrochemical sweat analysis

This study presents a low-cost, freestanding and disposable highly integrated sensing paper for real-time analysis of sweat, which can detect glucose and lactate simultaneously. The printed paper design allows for efficient pathways for sweat collection and diffusion, making it a miniaturized, low-cost and flexible solution for a range of biochemical platforms.

Summary: Two-dimensional nanoreactors with cascade catalytic activity for glucose oxidation and hydrogen peroxide decomposition were prepared by immobilizing GOx on Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets. The GOx-conjugated Ti3C2-PLL nanosheets exhibited excellent enzymatic activities and were further deposited on glassy carbon electrode to construct a high-performance biosensor with a low glucose detection limit.
