Recent advances in cation sensing using aggregation-induced emission

Summary: The discovery of the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon two decades ago revolutionized our understanding of organic luminogens aggregation and led to breakthroughs in various applications, especially in chemical sensing. This paper reviews recent advances in AIE-based chemosensors for detecting a wide range of cations, summarizing the design strategies, sensing mechanisms, and performance. The challenges and opportunities in the field of AIE-based chemosensors for cations are also discussed.
