Photochromic oxazines are extensively researched for their unique properties, including photo-coloration, reversibility, and various types of chromism. These oxazines have become the most desirable materials for industries due to their wide range of properties and impressive applicabilities. Additionally, their ability to function as fluorescent molecular switches makes them biologically significant compounds.
Photochromic oxazines have become a matter of extensive research owing to their amazing photo-colouration, excellent reversibility, high fatigue resistance, and various other extraordinary properties that can be tuned with the help of diverse substituents on different fragments of the oxazine. In this review, 1,3-oxazines that exhibit photochromism, are discussed in detail with a special focus on their synthesis, properties and applications. Apart from photochromism, these oxazines were found to display multiple types of chromism, viz. halochromism, thermochromism, piezochromism as well as electrochromism, all of which are elaborated appropriately in the article. The oxazines, possessing such a wide range of properties, have become the most desirable materials for industries. Furthermore, their ability to function as fluorescent molecular switches turn these into biologically significant compounds. The review covers all such impressive applicabilities under its scope.
