Effect of integrated treatment on improving the enzymatic digestibility of poplar and the structural features of isolated hemicelluloses

Summary: In this study, a two-step hydrothermal pretreatment combined with alkali extraction method was used to deconstruct poplar cell walls for enzymatic hydrolysis, resulting in the removal of a significant amount of hemicelluloses and lignin. Confocal Raman microscopy revealed that hemicelluloses were unevenly removed from cell walls, mainly originating from the secondary wall. Water-soluble hemicelluloses were found to have a more branched structure compared to alkali-soluble hemicelluloses, with a linear backbone of (1 -> 4)-beta-D-Xylp and 4-O-Me-alpha-d-GlcpA side chains identified in hemicelluloses isolated from poplar. This work provides an efficient pathway to convert poplar into fermentable sugars and hemicelluloses with significant yield.

Insights into the oxidation-reduction strategy for lignin conversion to high-value aromatics

Summary: This study investigated the effects of key factors on the reductive conversion of oxidized lignin to aromatics, exploring pathways and mechanisms. Under moderate hydrogen pressure with metal-acid catalysts, an advantage in lignin conversion was found. A catalyst with both hydrogenolysis and hydrolysis activity was essential for efficient lignin depolymerization.

Microwave-assisted alkali hydrolysis for cellulose isolation from wheat straw: Influence of reaction conditions and non-thermal effects of microwave

Summary: This study found that temperature had a more significant impact on the cellulose content in fiber, and microwave-assisted hydrolysis could significantly reduce reaction time and chemical costs compared to traditional heating hydrolysis. Extensive determination and characterization confirmed the existence of non-thermal effect of microwave assistance.

Extraction of cellulose from corn stover using designed ionic liquids with improved reusing capabilities

Summary: In recent years, the use of ionic liquids for dissolving lignocellulosic biomass, particularly corn stover, has gained attention. Five designed ILs were able to dissolve cellulose in corn stover under mild conditions, with one IL showing the highest dissolution efficiency. Imidazolium ILs were found to be more effective in ash removal from corn stover compared to tetra-alkyl-phosphonium ILs.
