A novel way to quantify schizophrenia symptoms in clinical trials

Oleg N. Medvedev et al.

Summary: By applying Generalizability Theory, we were able to distinguish between dynamic and enduring aspects of schizophrenia symptoms, with attention, delusions, blunted affect, and poor rapport being identified as the most enduring symptoms, while grandiosity, preoccupation, somatic concerns, guilt feeling, and hallucinatory behavior appeared more dynamic and amendable to change. Targeting these dynamic symptoms in interventions could lead to more effective treatment of schizophrenia and increase sensitivity in clinical trials.

N-Acetylcysteine Attenuates the Anxiety-Like Behavior and Spatial Cognition Impairment Induced by Doxorubicin and Cyclophosphamide Combination Treatment in Rats

Yoshihisa Kitamura et al.

Summary: The study found that the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine can reverse the anxiety-like behavior and cognitive impairment induced by the combination treatment of doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide. The medication not only affects the behavior of rats, but also has an impact on the oxidative stress levels in the hippocampus.

An organization- and category-level comparison of diagnostic requirements for mental disorders in ICD-11 and DSM-5

Michael B. First et al.

Summary: While the organization of ICD-11 and DSM-5 in mental disorder classification is substantially similar, there are significant differences, including certain disorder categories exclusive to each system. Out of 103 diagnostic entities appearing in both ICD-11 and DSM-5, 20 were rated as having major differences, indicating divergent interpretations and uses of evidence. The efforts towards harmonization have resulted in closer alignment between ICD and DSM, but differences remain based on priorities and interpretations, enabling empirical comparisons and advancements in the field.

Pharmacokinetics and Safety of Single and Multiple Doses of Oral N-Acetylcysteine in Healthy Chinese and Caucasian Volunteers: An Open-Label, Phase I Clinical Study

Alberto Papi et al.

Summary: This study found that the pharmacokinetic characteristics of NAC are similar in healthy Chinese and Caucasian individuals after single and repeated administration, with a favorable tolerability profile. Plasma concentration of NAC rapidly increased after both single and multiple doses, reaching a peak at approximately 1.0 h. Adverse events were mainly observed in Caucasian participants, while no adverse events occurred in Chinese participants.
