Non-Hydrolyzable Plastics - An Interdisciplinary Look at Plastic Bio-Oxidation

Hedda Inderthal et al.

Summary: Enzymatic plastic conversion is seen as a potential alternative to traditional plastic waste management, with a focus on biodegradable plastics such as polyesters. However, there are still challenges in applying enzymatic degradation to other commercial plastics. Addressing extensive knowledge gaps and understanding the crucial impact of physicochemical factors on reactions in less well-studied plastic types are essential for expanding the application of enzymatic degradation.

Potential for and Distribution of Enzymatic Biodegradation of Polystyrene by Environmental Microorganisms

Liyuan Hou et al.

Summary: This study identified microbial species capable of degrading PS and predicted target PS-degrading enzymes. Enzymes such as cytochrome P4500s, alkane hydroxylases, and monooxygenases are considered top potential candidates for degrading PS, with the potential to break C-C bonds and oxidize aromatic compounds generated from PS decomposition. These enzymes are distributed in various bacterial phyla, suggesting broad potential for PS biodegradation in different environments.
