Coal mine effluent-induced metal bioaccumulation, biochemical, oxidative stress, metallothionein, and histopathological alterations in vital tissues of the catfish, Clarias batrachus

Kalpana Chhaya Lakra et al.

Summary: A multi-biomarker approach was used to assess the toxicity of coal mine effluent on the catfish Clarias batrachus, revealing high metal bioaccumulation in the liver, kidney, and gills of exposed fish tissues. Significant alterations in enzyme activity and oxidative stress markers were also detected, with histopathological changes in various tissues justifying the high metal accumulation and biochemical alterations. Overall, the results indicate that the Rajrappa coal mine effluent is very toxic and may have adverse health effects on both fish and humans.

Levels of toxic metals in edible fish species of the Tigris River (Turkey); Threat to public health

Yalcin Tore et al.

Summary: The study assessed the levels of heavy metals in fish species from the Tigris River in Turkey and found that most of them were below the maximum permissible limits, posing no health risk to consumers. However, some species showed elevated levels of certain heavy metals, indicating a potential toxicological hazard to community health.
