High-cadence, early-time observations of core-collapse supernovae from the TESS prime mission

P. J. Vallely et al.

Summary: Observations from TESS of twenty bright core-collapse supernovae show that numerically simulated light curves fit well with Type II supernovae, suggesting consistency with explosions of red supergiants. An excess in flux before the start of the light-curve rise, potentially due to shock breakout emission, was found in a sample of Type II supernovae. During its extended mission, TESS is expected to observe a Type II supernova bright enough for the signal to be detected directly.
