Emerging Standards and the Hybrid Model for Organizing Scientific Events During and After the COVID-19 Pandemic

Sara Hanaei et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on human life, leading to the postponement, cancellation, or virtualization of activities that require gatherings. While virtual settings offer increased inclusivity and accessibility and reduce carbon emissions, they cannot fully replace in-person scientific events. In-person meetings allow for socialization, collaboration, and idea sharing, providing novel opportunities. A hybrid model that combines in-person and virtual components may be a solution, allowing participants to choose their preferred mode of participation.

The Overlap between Genetic Susceptibility to COVID-19 and Skin Diseases

Navid Jabalameli et al.

Summary: COVID-19 primarily affects the respiratory system but can also involve other organ systems, including causing acute acro-ischemia or chilblain-like skin lesions. A genetic region associated with COVID-19 severity contains the TREX1 gene, mutations of which are linked to familial chilblain lupus and systemic lupus erythematosus. This suggests potential overlap between COVID-19 risk loci and dermatological conditions.

Targeted therapy strategies against SARS-CoV-2 cell entry mechanisms: A systematic review of in vitro and in vivo studies

Simin Seyedpour et al.

Summary: This study systematically evaluated recent in vitro and in vivo investigations targeting SARS-CoV-2 cell entry, finding that SARS-CoV-2 primarily enters host cells through the S protein utilizing ACE2 or CD147 as receptors. Targeted therapy strategies against SARS-CoV-2 cell entry mechanisms mainly focus on targeting virus receptors on the host, neutralizing spike protein, interfering with virus fusion to host cells, and disrupting endosomal and non-endosomal dependent pathways.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2 utilizes its S protein to rapidly enter cells, sliding quickly with the flat sialic acid-binding domain in the N-terminal domain interacting with the epithelial layer, and entering via the ACE-2 receptor. The binding between viral RBD and ACE-2 may be optimal, and protein enzymes can accelerate cell entry by SARS-CoV-2.
