Occurrence, fate and removal of microplastics as heavy metal vector in natural wastewater treatment wetland system

Dhruba Jyoti Sarkar et al.

Summary: This study investigated a freshwater wetland system in Eastern India and found a high concentration of microplastics and toxic metals in treatment ponds and associated wastewater canals. The presence of microplastics poses a risk to aquatic biota, with potential contamination of fish. The removal efficiency of microplastics in the treatment ponds was estimated to be 53%.

Recommended best practices for collecting, analyzing, and reporting microplastics in environmental media: Lessons learned from comprehensive monitoring of San Francisco Bay

Ezra Miller et al.

Summary: Microplastics are pervasive and persistent contaminants in the ocean, posing a threat to marine ecosystems. Despite the infancy of the field, there is a lack of widely accepted standards and practices for accurate measurement and management of microplastic pollution.

Abundance and characteristics of microplastics in retail mussels from Cape Town, South Africa

Conrad Sparks et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastics in mussels sold in Cape Town, South Africa were mainly composed of MP filaments and fragments, with blue/green and black/grey being the predominant colors. The main polymer type identified was filamentous PET. Retail mussels in Cape Town were observed to have lower concentrations of MPs compared to other investigations, suggesting a need for routine monitoring of seafood in the country.

Microplastics removal efficiency of drinking water treatment plant with pulse clarifier

Dhruba Jyoti Sarkar et al.

Summary: Microplastics are recognized as common pollutants in aquatic environments that may have adverse effects on human health. A study evaluated the occurrence and removal efficiency of microplastics at different treatment stages in a typical DWTP with pulse clarification, showing good removal efficiency at the sand filtration stage and strong associations with other components in water. The results suggest that DWTPs with pulse clarification systems may have comparable microplastics removal efficiency to advanced DWTPs.
