Chemical attribution of fentanyl: The effect of human metabolism

Mirjam de Bruin-Hoegee et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of human metabolism on the impurity profile of fentanyl, representative of synthetic opioids, and explores the potential for chemical attribution of drugs through the analysis of metabolic trace levels in biological samples. Different analytical methods were utilized to characterize impurity profiles and identify key marker compounds that can discriminate between synthesis methods. The results demonstrate the possibility of using metabolic trace analysis for chemical attribution in forensic investigations.
