Summary: The study shows that current smokers have a lower risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection compared to never smokers, while former smokers have a higher risk of hospitalization, disease severity, and mortality from COVID-19.

Serum Antibody Profile of a Patient With Coronavirus Disease 2019 Reinfection

Summary: The patient's coronavirus reinfection did not show serum neutralizing antibodies during the second episode, but high avidity immunoglobulin G were detected within 8 days after hospitalization, indicating a robust immune response.

Genomic evidence for reinfection with SARS-CoV-2: a case study

Richard L. Tillett et al.

Summary: A man was infected with SARS-CoV-2 twice with genetically different virus variants, the second infection being more severe. The study suggests that previous exposure to SARS-CoV-2 may not guarantee immunity, and all individuals should take precautions to avoid infection. This has implications for vaccine development and application.

Global pandemics interconnected - obesity, impaired metabolic health and COVID-19

Norbert Stefan et al.

Summary: Obesity and impaired metabolic health are established risk factors for NCDs such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, and MAFLD, and have been linked to an increased risk of severe COVID-19. Specifically, visceral obesity and characteristics of impaired metabolic health are associated with a high risk of severe COVID-19.

Nursing home staff networks and COVID-19

M. Keith Chen et al.

Summary: Nursing homes and other long-term care facilities account for a disproportionate share of COVID-19 cases and fatalities worldwide, with outbreaks persisting despite visitor restrictions. Traditional federal regulatory metrics of nursing home quality are unimportant in predicting outbreaks, while staff network connections and centrality within the greater network strongly predict COVID-19 cases.

Orthogonal immunoassays for IgG antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 antigens reveal that immune response lasts beyond 4 mo post illness onset

Varun Sasisekharan et al.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of long-lasting IgG antibodies as a key correlate of immune protection against SARS-CoV-2 and suggests the potential for long-term immunity to COVID-19 from infection or vaccination, similar to other coronaviruses such as SARS and Middle East respiratory syndrome.

Workers at long-term care facilities and their risk for severe COVID-19 illness

Jessica Greene et al.

Summary: Due to the high concentration of COVID-19 cases in long-term care facilities in the United States, individuals working in these facilities, particularly Black, female, and low-income workers, are at increased risk for severe illness. Half of LTC workers face an increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19, while another 19.6% may potentially face an increased risk. Despite the vulnerability of both LTC residents and workers to severe illness from COVID-19, many facilities still lack adequate supplies of personal protective equipment and tests. Enhanced federal efforts are needed to protect LTC residents and staff from COVID-19, especially with state budget deficits limiting the potential for state actions.

Inactivated trivalent influenza vaccination is associated with lower mortality among patients with COVID-19 in Brazil

Guenther Fink et al.

Summary: The study found that COVID-19 patients who received recent inactivated influenza vaccination in Brazil had lower odds of needing intensive care treatment, requiring invasive respiratory support, and death. These protective effects were more significant when the vaccine was administered after symptom onset and among younger patients.

Prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 Antibodies in First Responders and Public Safety Personnel, New York City, New York, USA, May-July 2020

Samira Sami et al.

Summary: A serologic survey conducted in public service agencies in New York City revealed a 22.5% prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection among first responders, with correctional staff and emergency medical technicians having the highest seroprevalence. The study found associations between seropositivity and exposure to SARS-CoV-2-positive household members, non-Hispanic Black race or ethnicity, and severe obesity.

Distinct antibody responses to SARS-CoV-2 in children and adults across the COVID-19 clinical spectrum

Stuart P. Weisberg et al.

Summary: This study found distinct antibody responses in children and adults after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Adult COVID-19 cohorts showed a broader range of antibody responses, while children predominantly generated antibodies specific for the S protein and had reduced neutralizing activity compared to adults.
