This study found that the shape of the striker affects the energy absorption of STF, with flat-head strikers showing higher total impact energy absorption but lower maximum penetration depth compared to cone-shaped strikers. Additionally, as the diameter of the striker increased, the total impact energy absorption also increased with a decrease in penetration depth.
This study examines the effect of striker shape on the energy absorption of a shear thickening fluid (STF) with 58.8 vol% styrene/acrylate co-polymer particles in ethylene glycol (EG). Low-velocity impact tests were performed on the STF with six different strikers: three cone-shaped strikers and three flat-head strikers with different diameters. Higher total impact energy absorption was recorded for the flat-head strikers, yet lower maximum penetration depth than the cone-shaped strikers of the same diameter. The total impact energy absorption also increased when the striker diameter increased, but with lower penetration depth.
