Wild food plants traditionally gathered in central Armenia: archaic ingredients or future sustainable foods?

Andrea Pieroni et al.

Summary: The current study explores the traditional foraging patterns of different ethnic groups in central Armenia, highlighting the differences in the number of wild food plants gathered and shared. While Armenians and Greeks gather a large number of wild food plants and share many of them, Molokans and Yazidis gather fewer plants and have limited exchange with Armenians due to endogamic marriage patterns and difficulties in adapting to a new environment. The traditional practice of gathering wild plants for food remains vibrant in central Armenia, potentially serving as a pillar for future sustainable food systems.
