Anything but Ordinary - Emerging Splicing Mechanisms in Eukaryotic Gene Regulation

Niels H. Gehring et al.

Summary: Splicing of precursor mRNAs is essential for eukaryotic gene expression, with accurate identification of splice sites and intron removal being crucial for producing desired mRNA isoforms. Recent research has uncovered noncanonical splicing mechanisms that play key roles in gene expression regulation, in addition to well-understood basic splicing regulation mechanisms.

Summary: Genetic coding typically utilizes one strand of a gene for replication, with the complementary strand as the template. AminoacyltRNA synthetases originally emerged in pairs on bidirectional genes, but were quickly replaced, leaving traces of elevated pairing between codon middle bases in antiparallel alignments. Codon assignments facilitate the use of information from both strands in multiple reading frames.
