Interpreting neural network models of residual scalar flux

G. D. Portwood et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that artificial neural networks (ANNs) can provide effective and competitive closures while also offering interpretability and useful insights into turbulence closures. By training deep ANN models and optimizing coefficients in the context of large-eddy simulations, it is shown that ANN models outperform other subfilter flux models in tracking resolved scalar variance accurately. The statistical interpretation of ANN models and their dynamic behavior contribute to enhanced accuracy in LES of passive scalars and potential applications in interpretability and robustness in model discovery.

Using physics-informed enhanced super-resolution generative adversarial networks for subfilter modeling in turbulent reactive flows

Mathis Bode et al.

Summary: Turbulence poses challenges in predicting reactive flows accurately. The development of new turbulence closures is essential for combustion problems. Data-driven modeling has gained popularity in various fields, but applying deep neural networks in fluid dynamics remains challenging. The study introduces a novel subfilter modeling approach based on a generative adversarial network, improving generalization capability through a two-step training method.
